An independent Penang guide·Est. 2017

The people behind every recommendation on this site.

Tourism Penang is written by a seven-person team that lives in George Town, walks the same hawker lanes our readers do, and re-checks every venue by foot every twelve months. No scraped lists. No anonymous contributors. No content-mill rewrites.

The masthead

Seven writers, photographers, and one retired hawker — all based in George Town.

Every guide on Tourism Penang is signed by a named author with a bio, a face, and the date they last set foot inside the venue. No exceptions. No ghostwriters.

The seasonal ritual

How a recommendation earns — and keeps — its place on Tourism Penang.

A four-step on-foot cycle that runs every twelve months for every one of our 600+ verified venues. No desk research. No recycled reviews. If a stall closes or changes hands, we know within forty-eight hours.

  1. Chapter I

The first visit — by foot, alone.

Every new venue is visited unannounced by the writer whose beat it sits on. One meal, one full note, two unposed photographs. No group visits, no PR walk-throughs. If a writer can't reach a venue on foot within the day, it's logged for a future route guide — not added as a recommendation.

  2. Chapter II

    The second-pair check.

A second team member visits within fourteen days, orders differently, and writes a parallel note without reading the first. Both notes are kept on file. If the two reports disagree on anything material — hours, prices, taste — a third visit is triggered before the venue is published.

  3. Chapter III

Published with a date, not a star.

We don't run aggregate star ratings. Instead every published venue carries the date it was last physically visited, signed by the writer. Readers know exactly how fresh the opinion is, instead of trusting an opaque "4.6 / 5."

  4. Chapter IV

    The twelve-month re-walk.

Every venue is re-visited, in person, on foot, within twelve months of its last review. The Hawker Index is checked weekly; if a stall closes permanently or changes ownership, the listing is updated within forty-eight hours, and the review is rewritten end-to-end rather than patched.

A short founder statement

“I started this site in 2017 because a friend visiting Penang asked me where to eat, and I couldn't point her to a single English-language guide I'd actually trust. Seven years on, that question is still the only brief that matters.

We don't scrape TripAdvisor. We don't run sponsored posts that pretend to be organic. We don't recycle ten-year-old guides from a tourist-board PDF. If one of our writers hasn't eaten the dish, walked the lane, or slept in the room in the last twelve months — and signed their name to it — it doesn't go on the site.”
